Why I Love Design
I am a structural engineer because I love physics AND architecture. As a child, I would often dream up and sketch house designs, but the truth is I was always more gifted in math than in envisioning unique architecture. But I have a strong appreciation for the creativity of my clients’ designs and find joy in turning your architectural vision into reality. I’ve turned my creative energy toward conceiving functional details that support your architectural intent, while meeting your owner’s constraints and goals.
Yep – you found the guy who loves calculus but is also relatable. Unicorns do exist. Life is too short to work with difficult people. I pride myself on exceptional customer care and have never worked with an architect who didn’t appreciate our relationship. You can find out just how easy designing with a good partner can be.
Bio
I’m originally from Virginia Beach and grew up spending lots of time in the sand and sun. I studied Civil/Structural Engineering at Virginia Tech and graduated at the top of my class in the Structures, Foundations & Construction concentration. I spent so much time in Patton Hall (the Civil Engineering hall) that my roommates nicknamed me General Patton. I was fascinated by structural design then and still am.

After graduating, I worked for 5 years with Stroud, Pence & Associates (previously a 20-man structural firm based in Virginia Beach), designing a wide array of buildings, including public schools, offices, retail, industrial buildings, a church, and a hospital addition. From there, I served as a structural engineer with NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic (Norfolk, VA), designing and reviewing designs, and becoming a trusted resource for blast-resistant structures and progressive collapse avoidance.
Then I spent a few years with MMM Design Group (previously an 80-man multi-disciplinary design firm based in Norfolk, VA), as the Building Section Manager, designing office buildings, recreation centers, and a municipal courthouse, and managing the building-devoted segment of the structural department. In all, I have over 20 years of industry experience, including 13 years of (A LOT MORE THAN) full-time design experience. Like you, I’m fueled by coffee.
In 2015, I moved to Colorado Springs with my wife and two (now three) children. We love spending time together outdoors sans mosquitoes (you other East Coasters out there feel me…). Since then, I’ve supported the mission of the Air Force Academy by managing design and construction projects, and currently serve as the Resident Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Academy, responsible for about $30M to $40M of construction each year.

When I’m not busy bringing your visions to life, you can find me outdoors with friends, high on a cliff face or wandering down a trail. I love the heights, and of course ropes and anchors – force vectors are a part of me. I recharge and find inspiration by taking in the grand designs of nature.
